I spent my teen years in Holland, Michigan and lived barely three miles from one of the "Great Lakes" - Lake Michigan. Being of Dutch Heritage I was immediately drawn to the waters of Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa.
My first boat, a 22 ft. Pontoon, was purchased with ten high school buddies. We navigated the waters of Lake Michigan between Holland and Saugatuck, Michigan. As you might imagine, we polished our boating skills as well as our social skills during the two summers we owned that boat.
Over the years I've owned a number of boats both sail and power, currently I own a 32 ft Pacific Seacraft PH "Nouvelle", moored in Stonington, Connecticut. I'm also a member of the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club. I've sailed extensively in the Caribbean, mostly in the British Virgin Islands. On my list of personal goals was to qualify for a USCG Captain's license, which I was awarded in 2005.
For a few short years my boating cycle was interrupted by college and the beginning of my business career. After college and a few short-term job-stops later, I landed at Friendly Ice Cream. I worked my way through the organization including a stop in Troy, Ohio (no water there). However, in May of 2006, after 33 terrific years at Friendly's, the last ten as Vice-President of manufacturing, I retired. That summer as a retiree, I could pick and choose the locations and days of sailing, but something was missing - my enthusiastic nature to help customers.
One of our goals at Friendly Ice Cream was to create a product and experience that would exceed our customer's expectations. That is precisely what the Hellier Yacht Sales Team is all about. My goal at Hellier's is to use my experience in business and passion for boating to help our customers receive the yachting experience they desire.

I grew up on an island in the Detroit River and Lake Erie. Started dodging freighters in a 12 Nipper. Then raced and sailed Lightings, Thistles, New York 25s and worked on a 45’ wooden ketch. After U of M (Michigan) sailed a Herreshoff 26 then a Pearson 26. Got lucky and moved to Maine, raced Ensigns and again lucky raced on the Monhegan race in a custom 42. Saw my first whales. Wow!
We moved  all over the country in my big job, but was able to continue in boating in some of the cities, 25’ Folkboat and Tartan 34 on Long Island sound. Got to crew and skipper in five Pt. Huron to Mackinac races in a custom Ford design 40. We came back to Maine to sell boats into charter fleet in Tortola. Now living in Kennebunkport.
I have been lucky to be associated with Eastern Yacht Sales over the last 18 years and am very excited to be able to be part of the new office in Portland, ME.

He still writes the Yard column for Power & Motoryacht magazine and contributes to the quarterly publication Sportboat, which he helped launch in 2010. He has tested thousands of boats ranging from 16’ bowriders to 80’ yachts. Eric spent much of his career behind the wheel of high-performance boats and competed in Offshore Powerboat Racing, winning a division championship in 1993. He has actually driven a boat at the astounding speed of 172 mph and was fortunate enough to have participated in the Offshore World Championships in Key West, Fla. Eric is looking forward to putting his knowledge to work finding the right boat for customers at the new Eastern Yacht Sales offices in Portland, Maine.

My career as a yacht broker started several years ago. However, my experience with boating goes back almost 40 years. In this time period I’ve gained much knowledge of both power and sail boats having owned and chartered many from Annapolis to the BVI.

As a broker I pride myself in working very hard for my clients with the honesty and integrity they deserve. It gives me pleasure finding them the perfect boat that fits their needs and budget, or in helping them to sell their boat at a competitive price. In my opinion, one of the best compliments any Yacht broker can have is a satisfied return customer.

When I’m not brokering boats I can be found on my 35’ sailboat sailing out of Bristol Yacht Club , RI with my wife Gail.

Stop by our Portsmouth, RI office and say hello or just talk about Boats!

Ham grew up racing Widgeons and Shields on Vineyard Sound. But he doesn't choose sides. He's equally at home on the racing circuit as he is casting for stripers on Narragansett Bay. Ham brings a lifetime of experience to the Eastern team, having spent his formative years in various boatyards and running private yachts for some of Newport's more noted residents. His sailing experience includes competition in countless one-design and big boat regattas, extensive pleasure cruising and numerous near- and offshore deliveries. When he's not sailing, you'll have to be the early bird to catch him heading out for bass on his center console.

A graduate of Connecticut College, member of the Barrington Yacht Club (RI) and past member of the Edgartown Yacht Club, Ham lives with his wife and two children in Barrington, RI.
